Photography

Moths were attracted to a Skinner light-box with 2x 20V actinic bulbs overnight and released the following morning. Locations included Essex, Dorset and Argyll & Bute. All individual photographs were taken between April-October 2022 using a Sony RX10 IV camera (20.1 megapixel sensor) with the following range of settings: ISO<1000, F2.4-4 aperture and 1/100-1/2000 shutter speed. Photos were subsequently cropped and collated in Photoshop. Note that in most cases, the legs and antennae of the moths have been digitally erased to aid collation.

Artist

James Bashford is a doctor and scientist who likes to photograph moths and butterflies in his spare time. Highlighting the intimate connections between the natural world and humans, James' artwork attempts to raise awareness about the climate and biodiversity crises.
